Shri Devjibhai Jethabhai Khokhari
A compassionate visionary who devoted his life to uplifting the marginalised, particularly the visually impaired and physically handicapped. Driven by the belief that noble thoughts must be transformed into impactful actions, he established Shree Bharatiya Pragnachakshu Gurukul in Porbandar on 1 June 1960 — a beacon of hope and empowerment for countless individuals.
A mission to empower
Devjibhai recognised the societal challenges faced by blind individuals and took proactive steps to enhance their quality of life. Through the Gurukul, he introduced initiatives focused on self-employment, enabling blind students to achieve financial independence and contribute to their communities. His efforts went beyond economic support — he aimed to build fulfilling lives for those under his care, including facilitating marriages for blind individuals, bringing light and joy to their personal lives.
A legacy of impact
The reach of Devjibhai's work extended far and wide. The organisation he founded has supported approximately 10,000 students with various physical disabilities, offering them shelter, education, and opportunities to grow. His unwavering commitment provided a sanctuary for those ignored by society, fostering their development and integration into the community.
Family and personal life
Devjibhai was supported by a loving family, including his wife, Jayaben, and their children: daughter Jagruti, son Kamlesh, and daughters Usha and Kamlakshi. Together, they shared his vision of service and compassion.
